What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)? A guide to brand visibility in AI search
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving how content and entities can be retrieved, understood, cited and represented in generative answers. It complements SEO rather than replacing it. GEO, LLMO and AEO are tactics inside the wider discipline of AI Representation Management.
Why GEO, why now
The entry point of buying behavior is widening. “What accounting software would you recommend?” “Which is better, A or B?” — questions like these now go to both search engines and AI assistants. In a February 2026 survey of 9,278 people, CyberAgent GEO Lab found that 37.0% of respondents in Japan used generative AI for search. If an answer omits a brand or repeats outdated facts, that can shape the buyer’s comparison before the company has a direct interaction.
GEO is the methodology for measuring and improving this new touchpoint.
GEO vs SEO
GEO does not replace SEO. Crawlability, indexability, useful content and clear structure support both conventional Search and retrieval-based AI surfaces, while non-Google platforms still have their own bots and source-selection behavior.
- SEO competes for position on a results page; the goal is the click.
- GEO works on retrieval, citation, mention and representation inside generated answers; the goal is to improve how the business appears in that channel.
Crawler behavior is not uniform. Vercel’s network analysis found no evidence that GPTBot executed JavaScript. Googlebot can render crawlable JavaScript for Search, including AI Overviews. Critical text in the initial HTML is therefore the safest cross-platform baseline, while crawler access, indexing and visible text still need to be verified per platform.
What the GEO research actually showed
The Princeton-led KDD 2024 study compared nine treatments across 10,000 queries. Statistics, quotations and named-source citations were among the strongest treatments in that experiment:
- Add statistics — back claims with concrete numbers
- Add quotations — include quotes from credible sources
- Cite sources — refer to named sources
The reported improvement reached up to about 40% for documents that were already present in a fixed model context. The study did not show that these edits improve organic discoverability, durable cross-platform visibility, traffic or growth. A later critical survey of 45 GEO papers makes that boundary explicit. The three treatments are useful options, not a mandatory bundle for every page; relevance and retrievability come first. Keyword stuffing performed below the unoptimized baseline in the original experiment.
What you can start today
- Know your baseline — ask the AI assistants your customers use about your key topics. Who gets recommended? What gets cited? Check spelling variants of your brand too.
- Verify initial HTML and access — confirm that critical copy is present in the initial response, then check
robots.txt, CDN/WAF behavior and the relevant vendor bot documentation. - Test answer-first structure — for a page that answers a clear question, place a self-contained 40–60-word answer near the relevant heading and put supporting links in the paragraphs below. Kevin Indig’s ChatGPT-centered research, reported by ALM Corp, found answer capsules on 72.4% of cited posts and 44.2% of citations in the first 30% of a page. These are observational findings, not a universal citation formula.
- Source your facts — attach named, dated sources to numbers and claims.
- Measure repeatedly — AI answers vary across runs and over time. Use repeated samples of a stable prompt set and treat the result as a directional estimate, not a fixed rank.
Summary
GEO is not a trick. It combines technical access, information design, source strategy and repeated measurement. Its foundation overlaps with SEO, while each AI platform still has its own retrieval and citation behavior.
